What is root canal treatment

Root canal treatment is the removal of the tooth's pulp, a small, thread-like tissue in the center of the tooth. Once thedamaged, diseased or dead pulp is removed, the remaining space is cleaned, shaped and filled. This procedure seals off theroot canal. Years ago, teeth with diseased or injured pulps were removed. Today, root canal treatment saves many teeth thatwould otherwise be lost. Endodontic treatment treats the inside of the tooth and is a specialty of Dentistry that deals with diseases of the dental pulpand its supporting structures.

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes inflamed or infected. You may need endodontic treatment if you have prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, tenderness to touch and chewing, discoloration of the tooth, and swelling, drainage and tenderness in the lymph nodes. Unfortunately, there are also times that there are no symptoms.

If you do need treatment, our Endodontic dentist will remove the inflamed or infected pulp, carefully clean and shape the inside of the canal and then fill and seal the space. After restoration, your tooth will continue to function like any other tooth.
